A Dream Fulfilled
Honestly, I chose Basketball.
Carver chose me!
Dear Friend of Carver,
In the summer of 2014, Antwanette Thomas had just about given up on her dream to play basketball on the collegiate level. Yet on one single day, that dream was given new life when a former standout Carver athlete, Derek Douglass observed her game in open play at Berean Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
While resting after winning her first two games, Derek approached her and inquired about her ambitions. That’s when he discovered she had recently given up on playing college ball. As she tells it, “I started laughing when he began to ask me questions because I thought he was joking around.” She soon found out he was not joking. He was serious when he shared with her the possibility of not only fulfilling her dream of playing ball but also the vast opportunities awaiting those who earn a college degree. They exchanged contact information and the rest is history.
Antwanette enrolled in Carver in the Fall 2014 and earned the starting guard’s position for the Lady Cougars. She enjoyed four years of play in the National Christian College Athletic Association. Athletic Director Martin Carter says, “Antwanette’s hustle and particularly on defense made every game competitive.”
Her excitement on the court only paled to the excitement she experienced on May 5, 2018 when she received her Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology. No day has her warm smile shined brighter than when she walked across that stage having fulfilled her dream both athletically and academically. Antwanette has accepted a position with Fulton County as a Family Engagement Specialist where she’ll make a huge difference counseling young people.
